Periodontal Therapy

Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease is a group of syndromes that affects the soft tissue (gum) and bone of the mouth. The bacteria that lives at the gumline surrounding all of our teeth at some point in some patients, begins to destroy the fibres that attach the gum to the teeth as well as the fibres that attach teeth to bone. As theese fibres are destroyed, the bacteria moves down the root surface creating "pockets" in the gum tissue around the teeth. Left untreated these pockets deepen until the involved tooth (teeth) is lost. Losing teeth is a disease, not a natural part of aging!

Periodontal treatment

Periodontal disease is initially treated with scaling and root planing. This is a non-surgical procedure. Two quarters of the mouth are anesthetized and the bacteria is delicately removed from the root surface. Once the bacteria is gone, the gum tissue will reattach to the root (to some extent).
